Drum Circle

  • Shiva Yoga 21915 Marine View Drive South Des Moines, WA, 98198 United States (map)

I invite you to join me for a healing shamanic drum circle on the 2nd Saturday of the month at Shiva Yoga Studio, in Des Moines.

No experience necessary, and only a $10 suggested donation.

Drum circles are a great tool for raising our vibration, for healing ourselves and our environment, and for focusing intent to make real change. You do not need to have musical training or experience to join this drum circle, it is open to all who want to be a part of the healing power of communal sound and vibration.

Bring your rattles and drums, and come prepared to do some healing!

Hour 1 will be spent healing…

On a global scale,

At the national and community level,

And those we are closest to.

Hour 2 will be spent healing…

Each other, individually.

I encourage all who are interested in participating to come; no commitment or experience is required (minors must be accompanied by an adult, and mature enough to participate for the entire 2 hours). Don’t be shy if you do not own a drum or rattle, a few extras will be available to borrow during the event. If you have a drum or rattle you enjoy playing, bring it. If you have an extra to bring and share with others at the drum circle, that is great too.

There are mats, bolsters, blocks, and pillows available for seating, but if you require a chair to sit in you will need to bring it.

What is Shamanic Drumming?

Shamanic drumming is a tool used to connect to the spirit world, to journey, and to heal.

What are the benefits of Shamanic Drumming?

Shamanic healing has been traced back as far as 40,000 years ago, and has been practiced on all inhabited continents. Drumming is a practice the entire globe has in common.

“The key to understanding the shaman's world is to realize that the universe is made of vibrational energy; that it is a single, flowing, rhythmic being. According to quantum physics, everything in the universe, from the smallest subatomic particle to the largest star, has an inherent vibrational pattern. The entire universe is created through vibration and can be influenced through the vibrations of shamanic drumming. The shamanic drum is a tool for altering the vibrational state of the shaman and/or the patient or a particular situation in the community.”[1]

Drum Circles are a great tool for raising our vibration, for healing ourselves and our environment, and for focusing intent to make real change.

“In modern times, scientists, researchers and psychologists give their own account of the therapeutic effect of rhythms. Recent research shows that drum rhythms strengthen the immune system, produce endorphins and release emotional trauma to create states of wellness. The healing power of drumming creates a balance that maintains the connection between body, mind and soul. It has been proven to have many therapeutic and transformative benefits. Research has demonstrated that energetic rhythms cause the brain to synchronize the two cerebral hemispheres. When the hemispheres pulsate in harmony expanded states of awareness are experienced. Powerful neuronal connections are generated in all parts of the brain when entrained to the beat of the drum and even damaged sites can be enhanced.”[2]

What else does drumming do?

While more research is needed in the scientific realm, those who practice drumming often claim a great change occurs. We are all individuals and have unique experiences, making each drum circle different from the next.

“Other studies have demonstrated the calming, focusing, and healing effects of drumming on Alzheimer’s patients, autistic children, emotionally disturbed teens, recovering addicts, trauma patients, and prison and homeless populations. Study results demonstrate that drumming is a valuable treatment for stress, fatigue, anxiety, hypertension, asthma, chronic pain, arthritis, mental illness, migraines, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, paralysis, emotional disorders, and a wide range of physical disabilities.”[3]

Do I need to know how to play the drum to benefit?

Absolutely not. One does not need to have musical training or any experience at all to join this drum circle, it is open to all those who want to be a part of the healing power of communal sound and vibration. I encourage anyone who is able to participate or be still for the 2 hours to join (minors must be accompanied by an adult), no commitment or experience is required.

What do I bring? Is there a fee?

Don’t be shy if you do not own a drum or rattle, a few extras will be available to borrow during the event. If you have a drum or rattle you enjoy playing, bring it. If you have an extra to bring and share with those who do not that is great too. There is a suggested donation of $10.

Do I have to RSVP or reserve a seat?

No, drop-ins will be welcome.
